Zhou Hongyi clarified that when he said open source is good, it was during a speech at Harvard on the 13th, while Robin Li mentioned closed source being better on the 16th in Beijing.
During the 27th Harvard China Forum, Zhou Hongyi delivered a speech stating, "I have always believed in the power of open source. As for some online celebrities spreading rumors, don't be fooled. He said open source is not as good as closed source? Even the companies saying this have grown today with the help of open source."
Subsequently, at the Create 2024 Baidu AI Developer Conference held on April 16th, Robin Li declared, "Open source models will increasingly lag behind."
Zhou Hongyi also expressed that open source will definitely surpass closed source, with Llama providing the best answer.
"Yesterday, in the middle of the night, Meta open-sourced Llama3 with versions of 80 billion and 700 billion parameters, both performing very well, surpassing Google's closed-source Gemini. It is said that there is also a version with 400 billion parameters on the way, and its performance should surpass that of GPT-4. As to whether open source works or not, Llama has already provided the best answer."
In Zhou Hongyi's view, open source is of great significance to the development of the entire Internet and the development of large models. Without open source, relying solely on one or two closed-source companies, the development of artificial intelligence would not have been as rapid as it is today.
Especially for our country, we are somewhat behind the United States in core algorithms and core technologies for artificial intelligence, so we need to be better at participating in open source, leveraging open source, learning through open source, and rapidly improving the core capabilities of artificial intelligence.
Zhou Hongyi also emphasized that open source and closed source are two different business models, and there is no need to devalue each other. Android and iOS, Linux and Windows are one open source and one closed source respectively, and they are all doing well.
