X670 Motherboards Ready to Support Zen5: To Be Named 9000 Series

AMD is set to release Ryzen processors based on the Zen5 architecture later this year, with three mobile versions named Strix Point, Strix Halo, and Fire Range, and a desktop version codenamed Granite Ridge. Motherboard support preparations have already begun.

Recently, ASUS released new firmware BIOS updates for ROG CROSSHAIR and ROG STRIX X670E motherboards, based on the latest microcode AGESA 1.1.7.0. Apart from supporting up to 256GB of DDR5 system memory, these updates notably include "1170-FireRange-Pi" support.

It's speculated that ASUS may have made a typo in the codename by directly referencing the mobile versions, whereas it should actually be Granite Ridge, corresponding to CPUID 00B40Fxx. s_7848524d9e214b19a78b849db2a13671.jpg This is pretty much standard practice in the motherboard industry. For instance, about five months before the release of the Ryzen 8000G APU, the first batch of motherboard BIOS support was already in place.

Following this timeline, it's likely that the Granite Ridge series will be released in the third or early fourth quarter. Following AMD's naming convention, it should be called the Ryzen 9000 series.

The Zen5 architecture will be a completely new design, with significant improvements surpassing both Zen3 and Zen4. The performance boost is expected to be substantial.

According to reliable leaker "Kepler_L2," in SPEC benchmark tests, Zen5 architecture is projected to have over a 40% increase in single-core performance compared to Zen4. s_459e909f7b77441a8bc0bbaf77b6a9c9.png
