Western Digital states that Transporter can meet the demand for on-location storage of all data, such as for film production crews, in cases where network connection speeds are too slow or transmission costs are too high.
While the Ultrastar Transporter is "portable," it is not "portable for use." The device consumes 1300 watts at peak consumption and is very bulky, requiring the installation of two high devices on a 19-inch rack.
Official data regarding weight seems to vary slightly. The datasheet states a weight close to 15 kilograms (about 33 pounds), while the product description and announcements indicate a weight of around 13 kilograms (just under 29 pounds). This 2-kilogram difference may account for the weight of external packaging.
The Ultrastar Transporter connects to the network via two QSFP112 ports at 200GbE for data delivery or collection on-site. Additionally, the device is equipped with a 10GbE Ethernet interface embedded via an RJ45 connection.
