United States Issues Severe Geomagnetic Storm Warning: Grids and Satellites May Be Affected

On March 25th, reports from the media indicate that the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center recently announced an upgrade in the geomagnetic storm warning level to "severe," with a Kp index of 8, due to recent solar coronal mass ejections disrupting the Earth's magnetic field.

The Kp index, which measures the intensity of geomagnetic storms caused by collisions between charged particles and the Earth's magnetic field, ranges from 0 to 9. The higher the value, the greater the intensity of the geomagnetic storm.

According to reports, the Space Weather Prediction Center has alerted operators of critical U.S. infrastructure such as power grids, satellites, and communications to make advance preparations.

It is understood that on the 24th, the China Meteorological Administration issued a geomagnetic storm warning for March 24th, 25th, and 26th, during which there could be geomagnetic activity. On March 25th, moderate to severe geomagnetic storms may occur, with geomagnetic activity expected to continue until the 26th.

Under these conditions, the space station may experience a decrease in orbital altitude due to atmospheric drag, there may be increased positioning errors in satellite navigation equipment, and aviation flights will face the dual risks of deteriorating communication environments and radiation in polar regions. s_3a7229a2273d4328be9385cd7daa514a.jpg
