Understanding Intel's New Foundry: Master of Process, Expert in Secrecy

Recently, Intel Foundry Services (IFS) has been officially established, emerging from Intel's former Custom Foundry business unit to become the world's first system-level foundry service.

Now, Intel has released an infographic highlighting the key highlights of the newly formed Intel Foundry Services. 51390067-c224-4a7d-9646-968c13283eb4.jpg Intel Foundry Services (IFS) is a fresh brand introduced by Intel, combining their technology development, manufacturing expertise, and original Intel Foundry Services. It caters to both Intel's product divisions and external clients, with its standout feature being "system-level foundry services."

In addition to producing chips that excel in the "PPAC four elements" (Performance, Power, Area, and Cost), leveraging Intel's system-on-chip (SoC) capabilities, IFS also offers end-to-end optimization from factory networks to software, assisting clients in innovating at the entire system level.

In terms of process technology, Intel Foundry Services will continue advancing the "four years, five process nodes" (7/4/3/20A/18A) roadmap while aiming for double-digit performance improvements. A significant new node is introduced every two years, with the next stop being Intel 14A. Additionally, each node will have optimized evolutionary versions, such as 18A-P, 14A-E, 3-T/3-E/3-PT, and so on.

Currently, Intel has secured clients on the 16, 3, and 18A nodes, with Microsoft adopting 18A, for example.

Furthermore, Intel Foundry Services boasts unique capabilities in packaging technology, end-to-end optimization, and meeting AI requirements. Sbd0eb8f6-b885-47f3-b17c-2bb8ebf4eded.jpg It's interesting that Intel found its own four personality traits:

  1. Customer-Centric: Putting customers above everything else, even the most demanding applications, to help them develop and deliver solutions smoothly.

  2. Fair Allocator: Treating both internal customers like Intel's product departments and external customers equally, ensuring fair distribution of resources.

  3. Mastery of Secrecy: Strictly protecting the intellectual property and confidential information of any customer through the "information isolation wall" mechanism, without sharing it internally or externally.

  4. Environmental Enthusiast: Prioritizing energy-efficient designs through technological improvements and emphasizing green manufacturing. By 2023, the renewable energy usage rate had reached 99%.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has previously expressed a desire to serve customers like NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Google, and even AMD, treating all clients equally as a world-class foundry. s_5c3f0e9fa9f64b1aa8bc3b410adab0fc.jpg
