Tsinghua University Celebrates the 15th Anniversary of the Founding of the Chern Institute of Mathematics

On April 3, 2024, the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Mathematical and Physical Frontiers and the 15th anniversary celebration of the Chern Institute of Mathematics at Tsinghua University took place on the campus. More than 200 experts and scholars from domestic and international universities and relevant research institutions gathered at Tsinghua to jointly explore cutting-edge topics in mathematics and physics. 6610ddfde4b03b5da6d0c57b.jpg At the conference, held at Tsinghua University, Secretary Yu Yingjie of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, representing the Beijing Municipal Committee and the Municipal Education Commission, congratulated the achievements of the Chern Institute of Mathematics (hereinafter referred to as the Mathematics Center) since its establishment, and expressed continued support for the development of Tsinghua University and the Chern Institute of Mathematics.

In his address, Tsinghua University President Li Luming pointed out that high-level research universities are the best combination points for science and technology as the primary productive force, talents as the primary resource, and innovation as the primary driving force. In international cooperation on basic research, they must take a more proactive role. The purpose of this conference is to promote interdisciplinary integration of mathematics, physics, and artificial intelligence, and to further build an international exchange and open cooperation platform.

He hoped that experts and scholars attending the conference would speak freely and exchange ideas on the latest research topics in the field of basic science, and achieve fruitful results. He also hoped that the Mathematics Center would adhere to the "four orientations" in the future, continuously improve the level of leading talent cultivation in mathematics, accelerate the formation of original and disruptive scientific and technological innovation achievements, and contribute more wisdom and strength to the development of Chinese mathematics and global scientific and technological progress.

Fields Medalist and Director of the Chern Institute of Mathematics at Tsinghua University, Qiu Chengtong, reviewed the fifteen-year history of the Mathematics Center's construction and expressed that, under the continuous efforts of all mathematicians at the center, the Mathematics Center is now full of talents and constantly producing research results. Through cooperation with the co-founded institution, the Beijing Yanshan Lake Institute of Applied Mathematics, the center has further expanded its research fields to applied directions. In his address, Shing-Tung Yau emphasized the increasingly inseparable relationship between mathematics and physics over the past fifty years. He underscored the crucial role of mathematics in the development of physics and modern technology, expressing his hope that faculty and students at the center would participate in cutting-edge international conferences to grasp the latest research trends and explore the direction of mathematical research from a broader disciplinary perspective.

The four-day conference covered a wide range of topics, including geometric analysis, algebraic geometry, number theory, deep learning, dynamical systems, low-dimensional topology, stochastic analysis, and various areas of physics such as quantum field theory, general relativity, and high-energy physics. Additionally, it delved into interdisciplinary applications of artificial intelligence in medicine and statistics.

Established in December 2009, the Shing-Tung Yau Center for Mathematical Sciences at Tsinghua University has been under the directorship of the internationally renowned mathematician Shing-Tung Yau. Over the past fifteen years, the center has achieved significant advancements in attracting top talent, nurturing outstanding researchers, conducting high-level academic research, and developing the discipline of mathematics, thereby becoming a math research hub with substantial international influence.
