In a recent update on May 20th, when it comes to buying a USB flash drive, people usually prioritize factors like capacity, performance, appearance, and interface, while the lifespan is often not a major consideration since it's primarily used for temporary data storage and transfer.
A German storage company, Machdyne, has introduced a unique USB flash drive called "Blaustahl" that goes against the norm. It has a mere capacity of 8KB but boasts a lifespan of over 200 years!
It uses a special FRAM storage medium, namely ferroelectric memory, with ultra-low power consumption, strong radiation resistance, extremely fast write speed, super long write life, read/write cycles exceeding trillions, far superior to EEPROM, NAND/NOR Flash, and also tamper-proof.
The downside is its extremely high cost and limited capacity.
Major manufacturers of FRAM include Infineon and Fujitsu, with applications in automobiles, IC cards, and MCU microcontrollers.
At the same time, this USB drive is equipped with a Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller, 4MB NOR Flash firmware, and a USB-A interface.
It even comes with a built-in text editor, accessible through serial communication programs like PuTTY and Tera Term.
What can it do? You can probably guess – it's designed to securely store passwords, keys, and sensitive records for special departments in various environments.
