On May 27, 2024, the National Science and Technology Week's flagship event - the National Medical and Health Institutions' "Fastening the 'First Button' of Academic Career" preaching event and the annual academic event of the Chinese Hospital Research Integrity Alliance took place at Xiangya Hospital of Central South University.

It is reported that young scientific researchers are the backbone of technological innovation. Research institutions should strengthen the construction of research integrity, create a good research ecology of honesty, innovation, and integrity, guide young researchers to establish the correct academic values, and fasten the "first button" of their academic career.
Zhou Honghao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and lifelong professor at Xiangya Hospital, delivered a keynote speech titled "Upholding Moral Integrity, Honesty, and Being Defenders of Academic Norms."
Zhou Honghao stated that research integrity is the first button for scientific researchers. Young scholars who have just entered this field should first consider how to take the first step of their decades-long research career. Even seasoned veterans who have been in this field for many years should always examine whether this first button is securely fastened.
Zhou Honghao cited some retraction incidents in the field of biomedicine. He believes that the purpose of scientific research is to explore the truth, unveil the real world, and does not tolerate any falsehood. "From the beginning, we must have the correct scientific ethics and norms awareness, adhere to the basic principles of research integrity, uphold the scientific spirit of seeking true knowledge and being loyal to the truth, oppose all academic misconduct of deception and opportunism. We must always adhere to and promote the spirit of scientists."
Zhang Yuehong, Vice Chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology Journals and professor at Zhejiang University, delivered a keynote speech titled "On Research Integrity Culture." The conference invited many experts to focus on medical ethics review, empowering research integrity through information, academic norms of research integrity, strictly adhering to academic bottom lines, and governance of paper mills for sharing.
Guo Hua, Director of the Research Department of Xiangya Hospital and Chairman of the China Hospital Research Integrity Alliance, stated that as the main battlefield of medical scientific innovation, the construction of research integrity in medical institutions is crucial. In recent years, Xiangya Hospital has identified the research integrity system as one of the two supporting systems of the hospital's medical innovation system, striving to establish a high-pressure stance that dares not violate research integrity, an academic atmosphere that does not want to violate research integrity, and a regulatory system that cannot violate research integrity.
The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Health Commission, the Hunan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, the Hunan Provincial Health Commission, the Hunan Provincial Association for Science and Technology, and Central South University, with Xiangya Hospital, the China Hospital Research Integrity Alliance, and others as the organizers.
