The Communication Sector Dominates! Huawei Tops Global Patent Applications, Outshining Samsung and Qualcomm

On March 11th, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) revealed the ranking of international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) for the year 2023. The total global PCT applications for 2023 amounted to 272,600, marking a 1.8% decrease compared to the previous year.

China maintains its position as the largest contributor to PCT applications globally, with a total of 69,610 applications, surpassing the United States, which ranked second with 55,678 applications.

In terms of applicants, Huawei leads the pack with the highest number of PCT applications, having filed 6,494 in 2023. Samsung follows in second place with 3,924 applications, while Qualcomm ranks third with 3,410 applications.

Regarding 5G patent applications, Huawei secures the top spot globally, followed closely by Qualcomm, Samsung, Ericsson, and Nokia. Apple holds the 12th position in the rankings. s_18c678a6d20941eaba64a32b91beb29d.jpg Furthermore, Huawei is also a major contributor to the Wi-Fi 6 standard, contributing 281 proposals, accounting for 11.2% of the total proposals, and holding 477 related patents, representing 18.2% of the total patents. This positions Huawei as the top-ranked wireless equipment manufacturer in this regard.

Regarding the previous attempts by Western tech giants to block 6G technology, Huawei and other Chinese firms are not afraid at all. This is because they have already initiated relevant research and development.
