The Buick GL8 Avenir PHEV is Coming: Should Sienna Be Worried?

Buick has released official images of its new GL8 Avenir PHEV model today, also revealing some specifications and its launch date set for April 24th, just before the Beijing Auto Show. As the first hybrid model in the GL8 lineup, the new vehicle boasts a CLTC total range of 1370km. Pre-orders for the vehicle are now open.

In terms of design, the new model adopts a styling similar to the Buick Century, featuring a trapezoidal chrome grille, chrome strips running across the front, and encircling the vehicle, significantly enhancing the front aesthetics. The new split headlight design is very similar to that of the Century but is slimmer and more visually striking. 36d6723a-d494-44ca-b62f-2fd5eb727a24.jpg No specific details on the body size have been revealed yet, but it is speculated to be larger than the current ES model, approaching the dimensions of the Century. The side profile retains the iconic chrome strip on the roofline characteristic of the ES, ensuring high recognizability.

The side contour appears more sculpted, with additional chrome trim extending to the rear, and the door handles have been redesigned as flush-mounted to enhance the upscale feel.

The design of the side mirrors has also been modified, and the rear end is more reminiscent of the Century, featuring a similar full-width taillight. However, based on previous designs from the ES and the Avia, it is speculated that there might be some unique elements within the taillight configuration. 3b095daf-a67d-4902-95bb-a55cb2e339a0.jpg The interior official images haven't been released yet, but previous spy shots suggest that the Land Rover PHEV's interior closely resembles that of the Century. It's expected that the new car will also feature Buick's all-new generation VCS intelligent cockpit, with a fresh design for the four-spoke steering wheel and a 30-inch curved 6K screen. The system's UI is intuitive, supporting full vehicle FOTA functionality, and it's powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, ensuring smooth performance without any concerns. 2915334b-945f-4b30-ab41-2fd1928e05a9.jpg Additionally, the rear seat area will include an "Ambassador Dynamic Console," presumably similar to the one in the Roewe iMAX8, featuring a built-in refrigerator, cup holders, wireless charging, and other functionalities. The rear screen supports both touch and remote control operations, as well as smartphone mirroring capabilities. 84c33f30-f4a2-43fd-a0c2-a02401394160.jpg As for the powertrain, the new vehicle is equipped with SAIC General Motors' all-new generation of intelligent hybrid electric system, consisting of a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor, providing power figures of 292 kW and 580 N·m. The CLTC comprehensive cruising range can reach 1370 km. 704d56f8-7517-4150-9139-7f8b0b4d55b7.jpg The Buick GL8 is a household name in China, often praised for its comfort and solid chassis. However, its fuel consumption has been frequently criticized. Even the current ES model with its 2.0T engine hasn't managed to shake off that stereotype. The introduction of the hybrid version might just change that perception. Buick has cleverly highlighted "1370 km range" in their promotions, making it a focal point of their advertising. 40d1d445-4147-4022-83f9-5c4c22c5b0c5.jpg The arrival of the GL8 Landlord PHEV seems a bit belated. Perhaps last year's intense focus on competing with Senna allowed the Tengshi D9 to capitalize on the situation, attracting a large number of consumers and conceding the "sales champion" position. Moreover, vehicles like the Avia and Century, as well as contenders such as Jikey 009, Lantu Dreamer, and Xiaopeng X9, have also nibbled away at GL8's five-digit sales figures. 13f21bb0-4552-4438-a792-abcc877d6434.jpg But at least the GL8 Landzun PHEV isn't arriving too late, shedding the "fuel-guzzler" label and diminishing the few advantages the SaiNa had.

It also boosts its competitiveness in the emerging MPV market, coupled with its historical heritage, returning to the top of the sales charts shouldn't be a problem. Ultimately, it all comes down to pricing, with a speculated starting price of around 320,000 RMB.
