The 90-year-old grand auditorium of Henan University, a palace-style building and a national key cultural relic, was destroyed by fire.

On May 3rd, it was reported that a fire broke out in the grand auditorium of the Minglun Campus of Henan University, attracting attention.

According to a statement from the Kaifeng Fire Department: "At 23:22 on May 2, 2024, the Kaifeng Fire and Rescue Detachment Command Center received a report that a building roof in the Minglun Campus of Henan University was on fire, with no individuals trapped. After receiving the report, the command center immediately dispatched forces to the scene for disposal. The fire was extinguished by the fire department with no casualties. Relevant authorities have launched an investigation.

Public records show that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Henan University Grand Hall took place on November 20, 1931, and it was completed on December 28, 1934.

The hall is a palace-style building covering an area of 3932 square meters, with a length of 73.75 meters from north to south and a width of 53.75 meters from east to west. The total construction area is 4687 square meters, capable of accommodating over 3000 people.

Its grand scale was among the best in the country's universities at that time. The exquisite design, rapid construction progress, and high quality were rare in the country at that time.

In 2006, the modern architectural complex at the Minglun Campus of Henan University was listed as the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units, with the Grand Hall being a part of it.
