On April 19th, the press conference for the 30th National Cancer Prevention and Control Week was held in Beijing. This year's theme is "Integrated Measures, Scientific Cancer Prevention," aiming to implement the requirements outlined in the "Healthy China Action - Cancer Prevention and Control Action Plan (2023-2030)," strengthen cancer prevention and control popular science publicity, disseminate knowledge about cancer prevention and encourage everyone to take responsibility for their own health as a primary duty. The goal is to comprehensively enhance the awareness of cancer prevention and control throughout society, mobilize support and participation from all sectors of society in cancer prevention and control efforts, and create a favorable atmosphere for cancer prevention and control among the general public.
At the press conference (image provided by the National Cancer Center), Academician He Jie, Director of the National Cancer Center and President of the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, pointed out that since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the prevention and treatment of cancer has achieved historic development and significant results. The cancer prevention and control system in China has been further improved, with gradual effects seen in controlling risk factors, promoting high-quality cancer screening and early diagnosis and treatment, and significantly enhancing the standardized and homogeneous diagnostic and treatment capabilities. The overall five-year survival rate for cancer has increased from 40.5% in 2015 to 43.7% in 2022, successfully completing the phased objectives of the Healthy China Action for Cancer Prevention and Control. He hopes to mobilize all parties to jointly promote new achievements in cancer prevention and control and strive to achieve the goal of an overall cancer five-year survival rate of 46.6% by 2030.
Guo Yanhong, Director of the Medical Emergency Department of the National Health Commission, emphasized the importance of sticking to the principle of prevention first and actively developing a comprehensive prevention and treatment system for chronic diseases centered on health management. Efforts should be made to comprehensively strengthen the standardization of cancer diagnosis and treatment, promote the expansion and balanced distribution of high-quality resources for cancer prevention and control, and improve the level of medical service capabilities. Steady progress should be made in the Patriotic Health Campaign and the Healthy China Action, seizing the opportunity to implement the "Healthy China Action - Cancer Prevention and Control Action Implementation Plan (2023-2030)" and promoting comprehensive thematic educational activities to establish a concept of comprehensive and lifelong health protection. It is essential to strengthen the coordination among the government, society, organizations, and individuals, with each contributing their efforts to advance cancer prevention and control.
Zhang Yong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, read out the "Comprehensive Measures, Scientific Cancer Prevention - Proposal for the 30th National Cancer Prevention and Control Publicity Week" on behalf of the National Cancer Center, advocating for the concerted efforts of the whole society to deepen the action of cancer prevention and control, safeguard the health of the people, and lay a solid foundation for building and sharing a healthy China. During the press conference, promotional videos from the national and provincial cancer centers were simultaneously broadcasted.
Furthermore, the launch of the "Understanding Cancer: Preventable and Treatable" series of popular science books under the theme "Healthy China, Walking Together" was also announced at the event.
It is reported that the National Cancer Prevention and Control Publicity Week press conference was guided by the Medical Emergency Department of the National Health Commission, hosted by the National Cancer Center and the China Cancer Foundation, organized by the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and co-sponsored by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Beijing Oncology Society, and the Beijing Medical Creation Cancer Prevention and Control Research Foundation.
