On April 20th, the 2024 World Internal Combustion Engine Conference opened in Tianjin. Co-hosted by the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines and Tianjin University, the conference, themed "Green, Reliable, Intelligent, and Efficient," brought together nearly 40 academicians from China and abroad, as well as scientists and entrepreneurs from 22 countries, to discuss the future development of internal combustion engines and new power sources against the backdrop of "dual carbon" goals.
According to the organizers of the conference as reported by the China Science Daily, the opening ceremony featured the latest technological achievements in the Chinese internal combustion engine industry—a commercially available diesel engine with a thermal efficiency exceeding 53%. The widespread adoption of this diesel engine could save nearly 20 million tons of fuel and reduce carbon emissions by over 60 million tons annually in China, contributing to the acceleration of achieving the "dual carbon" goals.

The current Internal Combustion Engine Conference has set up sub-sessions on transportation energy and intelligent control, high-efficiency clean combustion, internal combustion engine carbon neutrality and emission control, design, manufacturing lubrication, and reliability, fuel cells and energy storage, modern power, and more. Experts and scholars from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Spain, China, and other countries are engaging in in-depth academic exchanges on topics such as net-zero carbon fuel internal combustion engines, hybrid technology, hydrogen fuel cells, etc.
The conference also invited 21 internal combustion engine and related industry units, including China Automotive Technology Research Center Co., Ltd., Great Wall Motor Company Limited, China North Engine Research Institute, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation Seventh Research Institute, Shandong Jingbo New Energy Holding Development Co., Ltd., China Shipbuilding Power (Group) Corporation Limited, to showcase outstanding new achievements.
"Internal combustion engines are the dominant power source for land transportation, construction machinery, and ocean shipping, and they are also the most promising products for energy conservation and carbon reduction." Jin Donghan, Chairman of the 2024 World Internal Combustion Engine Conference, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and President of Tianjin University, said, "We hope that through this conference, we can actively explore the 'carbon neutrality' technology path of internal combustion engines, and contribute to the progress of the world's internal combustion engine industry and the improvement of human social welfare."
The World Internal Combustion Engine Conference was initiated by the Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines in 2018 and is a comprehensive technical exchange event for the internal combustion engine industry participated in by countries, regions, and organizations worldwide. The conference is held every three years and includes activities such as international academic exchanges, summit forums, promotion of technical achievements, high-end product exhibitions, and on-site technical visits.
