Tesla Raises Prices, Xiaomi's Lei Jun Expresses Admiration

Qin Zhang Yong Thu, Mar 21 2024 10:29 AM EST

Yesterday's counterintuitive price increase by Tesla left Lei Jun speechless.

Effective April 1st, the Model Y's price will increase by 5,000 CNY. Additionally, Tesla's limited-time 8,000 CNY insurance subsidy for in-stock vehicles and a paintwork discount of up to 10,000 CNY will expire on March 31st. Taking all these factors into account, the actual price adjustment for the Model Y could reach up to 23,000 CNY.

That same evening, Lei Jun took to Weibo, stating, "Incredible, I truly admire them. In the current fiercely competitive electric vehicle market, only Tesla dares to raise prices."

The reason behind Lei Jun's surprise is not hard to guess. With the launch of Xiaomi's car on the horizon, the price of the Xiaomi car has become a major topic of discussion.

Recent trending topics about pricing have undoubtedly put Xiaomi's car in the spotlight.

As automakers engage in price wars and other brands close in on Tesla, Xiaomi finds itself in a "difficult position."

Domestic Companies Continue to Lose Money

Lei Jun's comments also shed light on other important information.

He highlights the challenges and frustrations faced by domestic electric vehicle manufacturers, noting that most, aside from Tesla, are incurring significant losses. But even so, Tesla's profit margin was only 9.2%, which means that even at Tesla's scale, profits are not that high. S25f9b36a-f78a-4b4c-9aa4-ef06707bcad6.jpg

Financials

It's true that among domestic new energy vehicle companies, only Li Auto turned around in the previous year. In 2023, the total revenue reached 123.85 billion CNY, and the net profit reached 11.81 billion CNY. This more than 10 billion CNY was not even enough for one year's research and development expenses. Moreover, Li Auto's excellent sales last year were due to its extended-range powertrain.

As for the other two pure electric vehicle companies among NIO, XPENG and Li Auto, XPENG's loss further expanded to 10.38 billion CNY in 2023, and its gross profit margin also declined to 1.5%, which was 10 percentage points lower year-on-year. Among them, the gross profit margin of automobiles was still negative (-1.6%).

NIO suffered even more losses. In 2023, its revenue was 55.618 billion CNY, and its gross profit margin dropped from 10.4% in the previous year to 5.5%. The gross profit margin of automobiles dropped from 13.7% in the previous year to 9.5%. The net loss further expanded by 43.5%, reaching 20.72 billion CNY.

As for Tesla's profitability, Lei Jun also gave some explanations. It was due to Tesla's huge scale and extremely high operational efficiency. He also cited the Model 3 as an example. The current price is 245,900 CNY. If calculated based on the gross profit margin in the financial report, a selling price of 223,000 CNY is needed to basically break even.

Price

Lei Jun seems to be analyzing Tesla, but he has actually hinted at the price range of the Xiaomi SU7.

When mentioning the pricing of Xiaomi's automobiles, he said that many people are particularly concerned about the pricing of the Xiaomi SU7. By the way, he explained that the standard version of the Xiaomi SU7 has a configuration that far exceeds that of the Model 3, uses solid materials, and has very high procurement costs in the early stage of product launch.

"There is indeed some pressure in terms of pricing. I hope everyone can understand. But in any case, we will definitely make everyone feel that they are getting their money's worth!"

Sfd874749-1092-4f99-9103-3479e32c539d.png Under the People's Republic of China Vehicle Purchase Tax Law, the current tax exemption for new energy passenger vehicles is capped at 30,000 CNY. Based on this, the invoice price must reach 339,000 CNY to meet the threshold for paying the purchase tax. This implies that the top-spec trim of the Xiaomi SU7 will be priced above 339,000 CNY.

While the above information has yet to be confirmed, we can speculate based on Lei Jun's remarks.

Given that the Tesla Model 3 is priced at 245,900 CNY, and considering Xiaomi's claims that the "Xiaomi SU7's standard version is vastly superior in terms of configuration to the Model 3" and that "there is indeed some pricing pressure," it is reasonable to infer that the starting price of the Xiaomi SU7 is likely to approach or slightly exceed this figure. Regarding the price of the Xiaomi SU7

In a recent livestream, Li Bin shared valuable information:

  • The Xiaomi SU7 will be priced lower than NIO vehicles, competing with NIO's sub-brand, Weimar.
  • NIO's current models are primarily priced above 300,000 CNY.
  • Weimar's first model is expected to compete with the Tesla Model Y, which starts at 258,900 CNY. This suggests that Weimar's pricing may be similar or lower.
  • Assuming the Xiaomi SU7 and Weimar are in the same price range, its standard version may be priced around 250,000 CNY to maintain its value proposition.
  • Interestingly, Lei Jun mentioned that the initial procurement costs will be high, putting pressure on pricing.

This suggests that:

  • As Xiaomi scales production, procurement costs may decrease, leading to potential price reductions.
