Taiwan Hit by Largest Earthquake in 25 Years: Micron, Samsung, SK Hynix Halt DRAM Memory Quotes

On April 3rd, according to the official measurement by the China Earthquake Networks Center, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck in the sea area of Hualien County, Taiwan (23.81 degrees north latitude, 121.74 degrees east longitude) at 7:58 a.m., with a depth of 12 kilometers.

Wu Jianfu, director of the Earthquake Monitoring and Reporting Center of the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau, stated that this earthquake is the largest in 25 years since the earthquake in the mountainous area of Taichung on September 21, 1999.

TrendForce, a consulting firm, stated that in the memory industry, due to Micron's DRAM production capacity being mainly concentrated in Taiwan, it has taken the lead in halting DRAM quotes. Negotiations for Q2 2024 contracts will resume after the assessment of post-disaster losses.

In addition, Samsung and SK Hynix have also followed suit in halting quotes. Although these two major suppliers do not have DRAM production capacity in Taiwan, they are also waiting to observe market conditions before providing quotes.

However, there was no significant fluctuation in the DRAM and NAND memory spot markets today, only a slight overall increase.

TrendForce also predicts that there will be a slight increase in DRAM spot prices in the short term, but the persistently weak demand situation requires further observation of the sustainability of price hikes. c23db905-5a46-4f8b-92f5-3abc588418bc.jpg
