In the early morning of April 3rd, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck in the waters off Hualien County, Taiwan. Since then, numerous aftershocks have followed.

According to data from relevant authorities in Taiwan, as of midnight on April 9th, there have been over 800 aftershocks, with many residents feeling tremors even during work or school hours.

The largest aftershock occurred at 8:11 a.m. on the 3rd, just 13 minutes after the main quake, measuring at a magnitude of 6.0. Additionally, there have been at least seven aftershocks ranging from 5.0 to 5.9 in magnitude.

Comparing satellite measurements before and after the earthquake reveals significant displacements of the earth's surface.

According to analysis from Taiwan's Department of Land Survey, observations indicate the following uplift and horizontal displacements at various stations:

  • Hualien Station experienced an uplift of approximately 45.1 centimeters and a horizontal displacement of around 8.1 centimeters.
  • Hualien Xincheng Station saw an uplift of about 26 centimeters and a horizontal displacement of roughly 8.6 centimeters.
