A new rumor from China suggests that Apple will use colored back panel glass similar to the standard model of the iPhone 15 on the upcoming iPhone 16. Last year, Apple introduced a custom dual ion-exchange glass process on non-flagship models of the iPhone 15, creating a frosted effect that contrasts sharply with the main frame color.
Apple described the effects of the iPhone 15 as follows:
"For the first time on a smartphone, color is infused into the entire back glass, creating five beautiful colors. The back glass is strengthened using an optimized dual ion-exchange process, then polished and etched with nano-crystals to create a luxurious, matte finish."
According to the Weibo whistleblower "定焦数码," he has already seen the color scheme for the iPhone 16. Apple is expected to use the same process on the back glass of the new model, with possibly up to seven colors this year instead of five.
At the end of last month, another informant from Weibo suggested that Apple may extend the dual ion-exchange glass process to the back of the iPhone 16 Pro, with expectations that the device will feature the same titanium metal frame as the iPhone 15 Pro. However, today's source did not mention the high-end model of the iPhone 16, and these two Weibo accounts have not yet established a reliable track record for Apple rumors.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 16 series around mid-September.
