Renowned Astronomical Optical Telescope Expert and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Zhu Nenghong Passes Away

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Zhu Nenghong, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a renowned expert in astronomical optical telescopes. Mr. Zhu passed away on March 8, 2024, at 13:58 in Shanghai, at the age of 85, after battling illness.

Born in November 1939 in Shanghai, Academician Zhu graduated from Tongji University in September 1960 and joined the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences the same year. Throughout his illustrious career, he held various positions including engineer, deputy chief engineer, deputy director, and chief engineer. Comrade Zhu joined the Communist Party of China in April 1979 and held roles such as Vice Chairman of the Seventh Committee of the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, Chairman of the Seventh Committee of the Xuhui District Association for Science and Technology, and Chairman of the First to Third Councils of the Shanghai Anti-Cult Association. In May 1995, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Academician Zhu Nenghong was a distinguished expert in astronomical optical telescopes in China, making outstanding contributions over more than sixty years to the development of Chinese astronomical instruments and space science, as well as serving national strategic needs. He upheld the spirit of excellence and self-challenge, dedicating himself to innovative technological research in astronomical optical telescopes. He spearheaded the design and successful development of China's first 1.56-meter celestial measurement telescope and a series of cutting-edge astronomical optical observation equipment including the first lunar dual-speed camera, vacuum photo zenith tube, 1-meter laser ranging instrument, 1-meter laser communication telescope, and dual-focus large-field and large-aperture photoelectric telescope.

Throughout his life, Academician Zhu Nenghong ardently loved his motherland, remained loyal to the party's scientific and technological cause, pursued truth, and served the people. He was dedicated, modest, and tireless in educating others, making significant contributions to the development of China's astronomical telescope industry and talent cultivation.

The farewell ceremony for Academician Zhu Nenghong will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at the Galaxy Hall of the Longhua Funeral Parlor in Shanghai (210 Caoxi North Road).
