April 8th, In a bid to completely eradicate any future occurrences of misconduct within Daihatsu Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corporation, along with its subsidiary Daihatsu, has jointly announced plans to reform the business structure of Daihatsu.
Under the new scheme, Daihatsu will be repositioned as a "microcar-centric mobility enterprise," while the "emerging market compact car company" spanning Toyota and Daihatsu will be dissolved.
In the future, Toyota will oversee the development and certification of Daihatsu's overseas operations, while Daihatsu will concentrate on actual development work.
This transition will occur according to the schedule for model conversion.
Simultaneously, the product planning function will shift to Toyota's compact car division, and the business and product management functions will be transferred to Toyota's sales and business department.
In a retrospective of events, in April 2023, Dafa Motors admitted to cheating on side-impact safety tests for 88,000 vehicles, with 64 models affected, including 20 under the Toyota brand. Then on December 20, 2023, Dafa Motors issued a statement acknowledging 174 instances of misconduct, including falsifying safety crash test data, with improper conduct dating back to as early as 1989 for one discontinued model.
