Pulsestacks reported on April 25th, who will take over the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen technology? Micro-LED may be a potential successor, but the industry consensus is that it will take at least another 5 years to be commercialized. Another potential successor, QDEL, is expected to meet the general consumers in 2026.
Pulsestacks Note: QDEL stands for "Quantum Dot electroluminescent," which is Quantum Dot electroluminescent technology, with the main difference from Micro-LED being the light source.
QDEL, also known as NanoLED, is an emission technology that does not require backlighting - quantum dots emit light directly through electroluminescence. These Q dots are the same as those in high-end QD-OLED, but they are brighter, cheaper, and have a lower risk of burn-in issues.
Quantum dot supplier Nanosys has been dedicated to the research of this technology for many years. Its potential brand name is NanoLED, but during the development process, it has used other names such as QD-EL, QD-LED, EL-QD, and QLED.
Nanosys currently targets 2026 as the window for commercializing this technology, but as a supplier, it still needs manufacturers like Sharp, Sony, and LG to start production.
