PetroChina Officially Debunks Myth: 95 Octane Fuel Not More Fuel-Efficient Than 92!

On April 13, it has been a common belief online that 95 octane fuel, compared to 92 octane, contains fewer impurities and burns more completely, thereby being more fuel-efficient.

In response, PetroChina clarified in a recent post: there's actually no difference.

As explained, the numbers 92, 95, and 98 in fuel grades primarily indicate the ratio of isooctane to heptane in the gasoline, known as the octane rating, which reflects the fuel's resistance to engine knocking.

95 octane fuel contains 95% isooctane and 5% heptane. The higher the proportion of isooctane, the better the fuel's resistance to knocking.

In simple terms, the higher the rating, the stronger the resistance to knocking.

Using different grades of gasoline, such as 92 and 95 octane, has little impact on average fuel consumption.

Various experimental platforms have shown through tests that the difference in fuel consumption is only about 0.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

Therefore, it's best to use the fuel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer without worrying about whether 95 octane fuel saves more gasoline. s_d1eac4dd1d764890865024381f2a28c0.jpg
