OV50K40 Sensor: A Game Changer for国产 Sensors

Xiao Lu Tue, Mar 26 2024 06:10 AM EST

Omnvision, a国产 manufacturer, has just unveiled a new CMOS sensor, the OV50K40.

What sets this sensor apart is that it's the first smartphone image sensor to incorporate TheiaCel technology, a unique design that enables near-human eye dynamic range from a single exposure.

The OV50K40 sports an impressive 50 megapixel native resolution and features a large 1/1.3-inch optical format, giving each pixel a generous 1.2μm pitch.

It also supports pixel binning to combine four pixels into one, outputting 12.5 megapixel images with enhanced light sensitivity.

The sensor boasts impressive frame rates of up to 120 fps and 60 fps (HDR), allowing for seamless full 50MP Bayer output, high-quality 8K video, and 2x lossless zoom capabilities. 29b304b0-e7b3-459b-90e9-4a4cf59aaf25.jpg Key Features of the OV50K40 Sensor:

  • Quad-Phase Detection (QPD) Support: Enables 2x2 on-chip phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) across the entire sensor array for improved focusing accuracy.

  • Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor (LOFIC) Technology: Captures excess photoelectrons that would otherwise be lost due to overexposure.

  • Principle of LOFIC: A high-density capacitor is placed at each photodiode site to collect the overflow photoelectrons.

  • Benefits of LOFIC:

    • Improved preservation of highlight information in high-contrast scenes
    • More realistic image reproduction with reduced overexposure
    • Extended dynamic range capabilities 33021a0576fd47f589e9e7214145e252.gif High dynamic range (HDR) is often one of the reasons why professional SLR camera photos have an excellent look and feel, as they can restore colors, light and shadows that are as close as possible to what the human eye sees. The launch of the OV50K40 sensor means that mobile phone photography can also have the ability to rival SLR cameras.

Editor's comment:

The release of the OV50K40 sensor marks an innovative breakthrough for domestic manufacturers in the field of smartphones. This sensor, which employs TheiaCel technology and LOFIC technology, not only has excellent resolution and light sensitivity, but can also present a dynamic range that is close to the level of the human eye.

Its appearance will further promote the development of mobile phone photography, allowing users to easily take amazing photos and videos. s_7fda088eb1594801b62eb1db889694e7.jpg
