OpenAI CEO Altman: Stealthy New Model Ready for Launch

With Google recently unveiling an upgraded version of its Gemini 1.5 model, and Anthropic also recently launching their Claude 3, is OpenAI, whose video-generating model, Sora, has made big waves, ready to unleash their much-anticipated next-generation model, rumored to be called GPT-5, upon the world?

In a new episode of the Lex Fridman Podcast, Altman shared his thoughts on GPT-5, Sora, AGI, OpenAI's board, and figures like Elon Musk and Ilya Sutskever. s_ccb547856f004e2584c71edad53ed392.jpg "When asked about the release timeline of GPT-5, I honestly don't know. Altman didn't share specific details or timing around GPT-5. We released a new model this year that we're excited about, but I'm not sure what we're going to call it yet.

As we iterate on different initiatives at OpenAI, we release different versions and iterations of our GPT models, such as GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo. It has sort of been assumed externally that the next one would be called GPT-5.

Altman also mentioned that there are a number of important product releases coming from OpenAI before we get to anything that we would call GPT-5.

When asked about what he's most excited about with the improvements from GPT-4 to GPT-5, Altman, while not being able to share specifics, expressed his excitement around ChatGPT becoming more intelligent. "I know that sounds like a canned answer, but I think what's really special about it is not that it's better at one thing and worse at other things; it's better across the board," he said.

"You meet certain people, you spend time with them or talk to them, and it's not even that they have higher IQs necessarily, but they just get you. There's something a little bit ineffable about it, and that's maybe the way I would describe the progress of GPT.

Altman went on to say that "the feeling that it understands what you're trying to say when you're not being super precise in your queries, to me, is really exciting. We all like to feel heard and understood."

Given the strong demand for generative AI, Altman suggested that because GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo were somewhat underbaked, the jump from GPT-4 to GPT-5 could feel as significant as the jump from GPT-3 to GPT-4. s_ad5edba9efe1498e98abcc4457006c67.jpg
