On March 28th, it's reported that when an employee was considering leaving Google to join OpenAI, Google co-founder Sergey Brin personally called him to convince him to stay at Google.

A source familiar with the matter, who is a friend of the Google employee, said that this phone call, along with a raise and other promises, ultimately persuaded the employee to stay.

Brin and Google have not responded to this claim yet.

Nowadays, the competition among major tech companies for AI talent is intensifying, and Brin's action is just the tip of the iceberg. While the number of top AI experts is limited, the demand for them has reached unprecedented levels.

Major tech giants are poaching each other's talent, offering shocking compensation packages for these top talents.

It's reported that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally sent personal emails to AI researchers at Google DeepMind. There are also reports that for certain candidates, Meta can even hire them without an interview.

Zuckerberg announced in January that Meta has acquired a large number of Nvidia H100 chips. He stated that by the end of 2024, his company will have over 340,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

In the battle for AI talent, Meta's massive chip inventory has become an important resource for attracting and retaining talent.

Aravind Srinivas, the founder and CEO of AI question-answering engine Perplexity, said that it was because of the lack of sufficient GPU resources that he failed to poach a senior researcher from Meta.

Srinivas shared his experience on a podcast this month: "I tried to poach a very senior researcher from Meta, but his response was, 'Come back to me when you have 10,000 H100 GPUs.'"
