During the embryonic stage, the fetus relies on the umbilical cord for survival. After birth, doctors cut the umbilical cord and tie up the remaining part on the belly. As the dead end of the umbilical cord falls off and the surrounding tissues slowly grow, the belly button forms.
The area below the belly button lacks muscle and fat tissue, only a thin layer of fascia. It is much thinner than the surrounding area and is highly sensitive to external stimuli due to its proximity to rich nerve endings and nerve plexuses.
It is not recommended to pick at the belly button, as it can lead to digestive discomfort, diarrhea, and potential bacterial infections causing inflammation. If cleaning is necessary, gently use a cotton swab dipped in warm water to clean stubborn dirt.
