Omdia: Expects AI Notebook Shipments to Reach Around 1 Million Units This Year

According to the latest forecast data from the Omdia Mobile PC research team, released on March 30th, shipments of Artificial Intelligence (AI) notebooks in 2024 are expected to reach approximately 1 million units, with around 80% of these AI notebooks being based on ARM chip architecture.

The agency estimates that AI notebook shipments will soar to 180.9 million units by 2028, capturing about 80% of the total notebook shipments. ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdingyue.ws.126.net%2F2024%2F0330%2F65249c97j00sb61mi000td000hs00bvg.jpg&thumbnail=660x2147483647&quality=80&type=jpg Pulsestacks, compiled by Omdia, defines AI laptops as follows:

  • The performance of a standalone Neural Network Processing Unit (NPU), measured in Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS), must exceed 40 TOPS.
  • The RAM specification should surpass 16GB, utilizing DDR5 or LPDDR5 random access memory (RAM).
  • Storage specifications should exceed 256GB, utilizing SSD or UFS storage.

The organization suggests that by 2028, there will be a demand for replacing devices due to the introduction of Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system. It is inferred that by 2030, Microsoft may cease support for the Windows 11 operating system. Given this premise, Omdia suggests that enterprises are "highly likely" to transition from conventional laptops to AI-enabled laptops starting from 2028.

On the other hand, by that time, Natural Language User Interfaces (NLUI) and their ecosystems are expected to mature gradually. AI laptops can assist users in transitioning from traditional Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) to Natural Language User Interfaces during the input phase. Furthermore, through generative AI technology, users can immediately obtain the required documents or multimedia data during the output phase, saving considerable time on various tasks. This novel input and output process will alter user behaviors and further transform existing enterprise workflows. Omdia predicts that this process and ecosystem will gradually take shape in three to four years.

Additionally, the organization anticipates that Google will integrate the Gemini AI model into Chromebook products, which will lead to increased usage of AI laptops among (overseas) primary and secondary school students in the future.
