On April 6th, according to the official WeChat account of "Haining Police," there has been a recent case where a man sought help from the Jianshan Police Station, claiming to have fallen victim to a scam.
According to reports, the perpetrator claimed to be a customer service representative from an airline, informing Mr. Zhou that his flight had been delayed and offering to help him with ticket refunds. However, they stated that half of the ticket price would be deducted. Alternatively, they suggested changing the flight, assuring that there would be no deduction and an additional compensation of 300 CNY.
Mr. Zhou opted for rescheduling. The other party mentioned a required process for rescheduling, so Mr. Zhou, under their guidance, installed the "Vision Plus" app and initiated screen sharing on his phone.
Subsequently, Mr. Zhou's bank card number, verification code, and other information were all laid bare before the scammer.
After a series of maneuvers, not only was the rescheduling unsuccessful, but the other party also claimed that Mr. Zhou had made an operational error, requiring a transfer of 50,000 CNY for rectification.
Mr. Zhou sensed something was off when he was asked to transfer money to the other party despite them being the ones supposed to compensate him. He promptly rushed to the police station for help.
Fortunately, the officers acted swiftly, freezing his bank account and removing the screen-sharing app from his phone, thus safeguarding his 3.75 million CNY.
According to the police, in such cases, scammers obtain passengers' ticket purchase information through illegal channels. They then send text messages or make phone calls to passengers, claiming that flights need to be cancelled or rescheduled due to mechanical issues, weather conditions, etc., and offer compensation. They deceive victims into clicking on links and providing bank card payment information for swindling purposes.
The police advise:
- Purchase or modify flight tickets through official websites, official customer service hotlines, ticket agencies, and other legitimate channels.
- Be wary of false pop-up messages and unknown calls on the internet. Never transfer money to unfamiliar bank accounts!
