Twenty years ago, Ningbo Institute of Materials settled in Ningbo, achieving a breakthrough of "zero" in the research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Zhejiang Province.

Over the past twenty years, Ningbo Institute of Materials has been simultaneously planning, constructing, recruiting, and conducting research, bridging the gap between science and industry. It has introduced and cultivated over 80 national-level talents and 670 talents at the provincial and ministerial levels, forming an innovative team consisting of 6 academicians, over 1000 fixed staff, and more than 2200 graduate students.

Today, Ningbo Institute of Materials focuses on three main research directions: marine key materials and application technology, magneto-electric functional materials and devices, and special polymers and composite materials. It optimizes the layout with five distinctive directions: optoelectronic information materials and devices, green chemistry and bio-based materials, new energy materials and system technology, biomedical materials and technology, and advanced manufacturing technology and equipment. It has established over 40 provincial and ministerial-level platforms, including key laboratories for marine key materials and the National Graphene Innovation Center.

The institute will continue to accelerate the occupation of the high ground in science and technology as its core task, aiming to build a world-class research institution in new materials. It actively constructs a high-end talent gathering place in the field of new materials, focusing on enhancing national strategic competitiveness, creating a leading industrial incubation area in the field of new materials, and contributing to the realization of national high-level scientific and technological self-reliance in the field of new materials.
