National Space Weather Monitoring and Early Warning Center: Solar Flares Will Not Affect Public Health

Jian Jia Fri, May 10 2024 07:12 AM EST

On May 8th, according to data from the National Space Weather Monitoring and Early Warning Center, from May 3rd to May 8th, the sun has been experiencing continuous strong eruptive activities.

The eruptions mainly manifested as solar flares, with a total of 6 major X-class flares and 24 moderate M-class flares.

This marks the 25th solar activity week and the most frequent occurrence of X-class flares in nearly 20 years. d5afefcb-3a22-4a67-963a-daa05b1a90d6.jpg According to CCTV News, solar flares can cause disturbances in the ionosphere on the sunlit side of the Earth when they erupt, affecting navigation systems, aviation communication, shortwave communication, and causing disruptions.

Although solar flares release a large amount of electromagnetic radiation and high-energy particles, only a small portion actually reaches near Earth, as Earth is protected by its own magnetic field.

Therefore, even with strong solar flare eruptions, there is little impact on human health. The public need not worry or take special precautions.

However, if relying on GPS navigation or planning activities dependent on satellite communication, some interference may be experienced. s_90358fd85af4498aa3bbc890ec99d828.jpg
