Musk criticizes OpenAI: Training AI does not maximize the pursuit of truth

Musk has once again expressed concerns about artificial intelligence, including OpenAI.

On May 23rd local time, at VivaTech, the largest tech innovation event in Europe, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that artificial intelligence will eventually replace all human jobs, but this may not necessarily be a bad thing.

In Musk's view, future work will be "optional." He mentioned that everyone will have high income and abundant supply of goods or services. However, the challenge people will face is finding the meaning of life. Pursuing meaning, people can treat work as a hobby.

Nevertheless, Musk continues to express his high level of concern about artificial intelligence technology itself, even calling AI technology his "biggest fear."

At the same time, Musk also expressed concerns about competitors like OpenAI and Google's Gemini. He mentioned that the AI trained by these companies does not "maximize the pursuit of truth," but rather focuses on "seeking political correctness." This behavior is essentially training AI to lie, which is extremely dangerous for humanity.

He emphasized that AI should strive to pursue truth to the fullest and maintain curiosity, even if the truth is not always popular. This is the safest path for humanity.

Currently, Musk is trying to catch up with market leaders like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google through funding for his AI company, xAI. These three companies have previously released more powerful generative AI models than xAI.

According to the Financial Times, xAI has received support from several Silicon Valley venture capital giants and is about to complete a new round of financing. Investors have reportedly committed to participating in xAI's latest round of financing.

Musk hopes to raise nearly $6 billion through this funding round. However, a participating investor revealed that the funding is still "several billion dollars away" from this goal. Currently, xAI is valued at $18 billion, and the post-financing valuation will reach $24 billion.

It is reported that Musk has told investors that xAI's advantage lies in its ability to collaborate with other companies under his leadership. His other companies can become xAI's customers, providing technology, data, and early revenue.

In July 2023, Musk announced the official establishment of xAI, stating that the company's mission is to "understand the true nature of the universe." xAI's website states, "We are an independent company separate from X Corp, but will work closely with X, Tesla, and other companies to fulfill our mission."

Musk has mentioned multiple times before that xAI "will definitely compete with OpenAI" and it offers a more competitive alternative in the field of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) than products from Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI. However, he also noted that xAI is still in its early stages, and surpassing OpenAI and Google will take time.
