More Bad News Besides Layoffs! Tesla Reportedly Delays Cybertruck Deliveries

April 17th, Caixin News (Editor: Xiaoxiang) Tesla, whose stock price has plummeted by nearly 37% year-to-date, has recently encountered another setback.

Following Elon Musk's announcement on Monday of plans to cut 10% of its workforce globally, the company's highly anticipated Cybertruck now faces delivery issues.

According to media reports, some Cybertruck buyers have recently stated that Tesla has postponed the delivery of their Cybertrucks in the past few days, without specifying the reasons.

Currently, it is not possible to determine exactly how many buyers have been affected by the delayed deliveries. s_1be26b3422d6489bb99b86e05d39fa8e.jpg According to Max Pyko, a Cybertruck buyer from Birmingham, Alabama, he was supposed to pick up his vehicle on April 13 but received a text message prior to that date informing him that the delivery date had been canceled. His new delivery date is tentatively set for April 20.

Media sources revealed that Tesla's message to Pyko stated, "We have just learned that there has been an unexpected delay in preparing your vehicle. We need to cancel your delivery appointment for tomorrow, and we will contact you again when we can reschedule your time."

In a subsequent message to Pyko, Tesla stated, "Based on the current situation, it will take until at least April 20 to resolve this issue, but it may take longer. We are working to promptly send improved parts to all affected delivery points."

Other Cybertruck buyers across the United States have also taken to the internet to complain about their delivery dates being delayed. Many buyers reported receiving urgent notifications from Tesla just hours or days before they were supposed to receive their vehicles, informing them of the delay.

The reason for the delayed deliveries remains unclear.

However, at least one Cybertruck owner claimed on social media that their accelerator pedal got stuck when a panel on the pedal came off. With the pedal stuck, the vehicle remained at "100% throttle" — pressing the brake could stop the vehicle from accelerating further, but releasing the brake would cause it to accelerate again.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated on Tuesday that it is aware of this issue and is in contact with the manufacturer (Tesla) to gather more information.

Previously, in January of this year, Tesla recalled nearly 2.2 million vehicles in the United States due to non-compliance with requirements for brake, parking, and anti-lock braking system warning lights on the instrument panel, with the Cybertruck being part of the recall.

The uniquely styled electric pickup truck was officially launched in November last year. Tesla CEO Musk warned that this model was unlikely to generate significant cash flow by the end of the year.

According to the Tesla website, the cheapest Cybertruck model is priced at around $76,000, while the more expensive version, named Cyberbeast, starts at approximately $96,000. In comparison, the cheapest Model 3 costs less than a third of the price of the Cyberbeast.

Currently, the Cybertruck can still be reserved on the Tesla website, but deliveries are not expected until next year. Tesla has stated that it will introduce lower-priced Cybertruck models next year.

In the first three months of this year, Tesla's global vehicle deliveries decreased by 8.5% compared to the same period last year. The company is facing increasingly fierce competition from Chinese automakers.

Tesla's stock price has been falling for three consecutive trading days as of Tuesday, hitting a new closing low since April 26, 2023. The year-to-date decline has reached 36.7%, and the market value is approaching the $500 billion mark after continuous erosion.
