On March 10th, according to domestic media reports, Minister of Human Resources and Social Security, Wang Xiaoping, stated:
The social security card serves as a fundamental platform for government livelihood services. Currently, 98% of the population nationwide holds a social security card, with 970 million individuals also utilizing electronic social security cards.
In 2023, electronic social security cards served 15.1 billion times throughout the year, encompassing a wide array of services in livelihood areas such as government services, medical treatment and pharmaceutical purchases, transportation, cultural tourism, among others.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, in conjunction with relevant departments, will further refine and expand the applications of resident services using the social security card, introducing more digital application scenarios.
Efforts will be continuously made to deepen the provincial-level "one card pass" system, vigorously promote regional "one card pass" systems, gradually realizing a nationwide "one card pass" system, to provide more convenient and extensive social security card services to the general population.
It is reported that the full name of the social security card is the "People's Republic of China Social Security Card", issued by local human resources and social security departments nationwide, and used as an integrated circuit (IC) card in various fields of human resources and social security.
The functions of the social security card are extensive. Cardholders can not only settle medical insurance personal accounts in real-time for medical treatment, but also handle pension insurance affairs, apply for job registration and unemployment registration procedures, claim unemployment benefits, apply for employment training, apply for labor capacity assessment, and claim work-related injury insurance benefits, among other labor and social security affairs, all online.
The social security card adopts a unified national standard, and the social security number is based on the relevant provisions of the Social Insurance Law, using the citizen's identity number.
