March 25th Update: Micron has showcased a single 256GB DDR5-8800 memory module, classified under the MCRDIMM category.

Reports from various sources indicate that Micron recently revealed its innovative 256GB DDR5-8800 memory module. This memory module features a non-standard height design. Additionally, to meet the demands of 1U servers, Micron has introduced a standard height variant.

The non-standard height module utilizes 32Gb DDR5 chips, densely packed with 40 chips on each side, totaling 80 chips on both sides. This setup effectively demonstrates its high integration design characteristics. s_c0401b22eeb44a54bb5cface712551d0.jpg The standard-height variant also utilizes 32GB DDR5 chips, albeit in a 2-layer stacked package to accommodate tighter spaces. However, this design may lead to slightly higher temperatures during operation in confined spaces. Despite the different heights, both memory modules have a power consumption of approximately 20W, showcasing excellent energy efficiency.

It's worth noting that Micron's showcased memory employs MCRDIMM technology, a collaborative effort between Intel, SK Hynix, and Renesas. MCRDIMM, or Multi-Chip Rank Dual In-Line Memory Module, initially specified at DDR5-8000, offers robust support for high-performance computing.

According to Intel's presentation last year, when paired with DDR5-8800 MCRDIMM modules, the Granite Rapids processor achieves an astonishing memory bandwidth of up to 1.5 TB/s in dual-socket systems. Granite Rapids supports a 12-channel memory subsystem, with each channel accommodating two memory modules. With DDR5-8800 MCRDIMM modules, the memory capacity can reach up to 3TB (12 slots) or 6TB (24 slots), significantly enhancing the system's data processing capabilities. This innovation injects new vitality into the field of high-performance computing, and we eagerly anticipate more surprises in the future. s_d1dd136f639b47098723ac2b42d00ccb.png
