(Beijing) March 20 (JLJDJW) - A new forecast from Canalys predicts that AI PC shipments will reach 48 million units in 2024, accounting for 18% of total PC shipments. But this is just the start of a market transformation, with AI PC shipments expected to surpass 100 million units by 2025, representing 40% of total PC shipments. By 2028, AI PC shipments will reach 205 million units, growing at a CAGR of 44% from 2024 to 2028.

Canalys notes that these PCs integrate dedicated AI accelerators, such as Neural Processing Units (NPUs), which will unlock new levels of productivity, personalization, and energy efficiency, delivering significant value to vendors and their partners.

“The proliferation of AI acceleration silicon in personal computing will be profound, with AI PCs accounting for more than 150 million shipments by the end of 2025,” said Ishan Dutt, Chief Analyst at Canalys. “AI PCs will unlock new and improved user experiences, driving productivity gains, enabling device personalization at scale, while delivering greater energy efficiency and security, and reducing costs associated with running AI workloads. This emerging PC category presents new opportunities for software developers and hardware vendors alike, giving rise to compelling use cases for consumers, commercial, and education users.”

“The rapid uptake of AI PCs will drive a modest increase in the PC market TAM,” said Kieren Jessop, Analyst at Canalys. “The enhanced capabilities of this new category will fuel premiumization, particularly in the commercial segment. In the near term, Canalys expects AI PCs to carry a 10–15% price premium over comparable PCs without integrated NPUs. As adoption ramps up, over half of the PCs priced at US$800 and above will be AI PCs by the end of 2025, increasing to more than 80% by 2028. As a result, PC shipments in this price band are set to grow to more than half of the market in just four years, helping to drive the overall value of PC shipments from US$225 billion in 2024 to more than US$270 billion in 2028.”

Canalys says that the implications of AI PCs will be broad and far-reaching across the industry for the next five years and beyond. As AI PCs become mainstream, vendors that can deliver innovative and differentiated AI-accelerated experiences will be at a significant advantage.
