LG Display is gearing up to mass-produce its cutting-edge gaming OLED panel that features adjustable refresh rate and resolution. This groundbreaking gaming OLED panel allows users to freely switch between high refresh rate (FHD∙480Hz) and high-resolution mode (UHD∙240Hz) based on the content. In contrast, traditional panels have fixed resolutions even when changing the refresh rate, limiting their versatility across various applications.
In high refresh rate mode, users can enjoy fast-paced games where speed and visual changes are crucial, such as first-person shooters (FPS) or racing games. Switching to high resolution mode provides an immersive experience when watching visually rich movies or high-definition 4K content.
Refresh rate refers to the number of images displayed on the monitor per second, while resolution represents the number of pixels the screen can display. A higher refresh rate makes images appear smoother and clearer even during fast screen transitions, while higher resolution results in more precise video and image quality.
LG Display's advanced solution is its proprietary technology called Dynamic Frequency and Resolution (DFR). With DFR, users can prioritize between refresh rate and resolution by adjusting the image processing speed. This technology is first applied in LG Display's 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panel.
The company's gaming OLED panels are also equipped with other LG Display technologies to enhance the experience. This includes the META technology 2.0 based on the company's Micro Lens Array (MLA) innovation, which maximizes the use of organic material light emission to improve image quality. Additionally, the panels feature Thin Actuator Sound technology, allowing sound to be emitted directly from the screen without the need for separate speakers, providing a more immersive audio experience.
LG Display plans to supply the new 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panels to global gaming equipment brands, starting with LG Electronics. This year, LG Display will accelerate its entry into the high-end gaming monitor market, introducing a full range of Gaming OLED panels in 27, 31.5, 34, 39, and 45 inches.
Unlike LCD panels that require a backlight, the company's Gaming OLED panels are self-emissive, allowing each pixel to produce perfect blacks and better image quality. With a super high refresh rate of 480Hz, they also boast the fastest response time (0.03ms) among all panels on the market.
