Isolation of Anti-Tumor Substances from Sea Cucumbers

Thu, Mar 28 2024 10:45 AM EST

Scientists from the Lebedev Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences Far Eastern Branch have isolated compounds with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-tumor properties from sea cucumbers. Sea cucumbers are marine invertebrates belonging to the phylum Echinodermata. Researchers have identified three new dimeric compounds from sea cucumbers exhibiting antioxidant and antibacterial activities, while also enhancing the survival of nerve cells under the influence of tetrodotoxin. These quinone compounds from the organism possess potential beneficial properties such as anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-tumor effects. Furthermore, the isolated compounds have been found to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and yeast-like fungi, as well as impede biofilm formation, indicating their potent antimicrobial properties.
