IT Home, March 7 - ION Storage Systems (ION), a battery startup based in the USA, recently announced that their solid-state batteries have achieved more than 125 cycles with less than 5% performance degradation, indicating the potential for over 1,000 cycles in future applications.
ION, a solid-state battery (SSB) manufacturer based in Maryland, USA, has made a significant breakthrough by deploying its unique no-anode and non-compression SSB technology for the first time with the U.S. military, meeting the critical requirements of key customers and industries. ION has been collaborating with the Department of Defense to test its SSB batteries, with plans to expand into other markets such as electric vehicles, energy storage, consumer electronics, and aerospace.

From the announcement, it's been learned that ION's patented solid-state, anode-free technology moves away from using graphite and other less sustainable materials, enhancing battery capacity through its 3D ceramic structure. ION's SSB (Solid State Battery) is also touted as the "first and only" compression-free solid-state battery technology that achieves the ARPA-E and DOE VTO rapid charging goals at room temperature.
ION CEO Ricky Hanna stated, "From day one, our goal has been to develop advanced solid-state batteries, delivering a more powerful, reliable, and safer solution for large-scale battery production. This achievement marks a crucial step towards realizing this vision."
In September 2023, following the successful pilot program, ION announced a multi-year supply agreement with the multinational giant Saint-Gobain Ceramics for ceramic powder, aiming to scale up the production of their anode-free, compression-free solid-state batteries.
