On March 7th, according to the latest report from market research firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR), global shipments of discrete graphics cards reached 9.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2023, marking a significant 32% year-on-year increase and a 6.8% increase compared to the previous quarter.

Over the past decade, the average increase in shipments of discrete graphics cards in the fourth quarter has been -0.6%.

Since the first quarter of 2000, cumulative shipments of discrete graphics cards have exceeded 2.3 billion units, with a total value of approximately $482 billion, equivalent to about 3.47 trillion CNY. s_bfd95de4191a4e69a8a33b24baa7ed07.jpg It's interesting to note the dynamics in the GPU market, which may differ from what many people imagine. Despite AMD's relatively small market share in graphics cards, their momentum has been consistently on the rise. Shipments have seen a sequential increase of 17% and a staggering year-on-year surge of 117%.

In terms of market share, AMD held only 12% in Q4 of 2022, which rose to 17% in Q3 of 2023, and further spiked to 19% in Q4 of the same year.

In contrast, NVIDIA has maintained its dominance, with shipments increasing sequentially by 4.7% and year-on-year by 22.3%. However, its market share has been steadily declining: from 86% to 82% and then to 80%.

Meanwhile, Intel continues to play a minor role, with its market share hovering around 1-2%. We'll have to wait for the release of this year's new Battlemage series to see if Intel can make any significant moves. s_b5ed81a8bf974896a5ca6b8bbfe7ddcb.png JPR's report indicates that independent graphics cards are experiencing a golden age after four consecutive quarters of growth. Despite their high prices, they offer exceptional computing performance, crucial for tasks ranging from AI and productivity design to gaming and video editing.

As for why AMD is experiencing such strong momentum, JPR hasn't provided a clear explanation. Care to speculate? s_4ec61e4daade439f878fdabfa30fb866.png
