March 17th news, the i9-14900KS can hit a maximum of 6.2GHz, but only one large core can do so for a short period of time. However, in the hands of extreme overclocker Der8auer, all eight large cores reached 6GHz!
A regular water cooler can't do this; even a top-of-the-line 360mm water cooler struggles to keep the i9-14900KS cool, and it easily reaches a thermal bottleneck and is forced to reduce frequency.
Initially, Der8auer could only overclock all cores to 5.8 GHz, but temperatures reached 115°C, resulting in thermal throttling.
He then delidded the i9-14900KS, used a custom water cooler, and had the cold plate directly contact the CPU die. This allowed him to overclock all cores to 6 GHz.
Simultaneously, the average power consumption was reduced by 12W, and temperatures dropped to around 95°C, providing excellent stability.
