In September 2022, Huawei introduced satellite communication capabilities to smartphones. The Huawei Mate 50 series enabled users to send text messages via BeiDou satellites even when terrestrial networks were unavailable. Subsequently, with the Mate 60 series, Huawei further enhanced satellite calling functionality.
Today, satellite communication has become a staple feature of flagship smartphones. While it may not be frequently used in everyday scenarios, its utility becomes apparent in times of need.
In the newly released Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, Huawei has once again upgraded its satellite communication feature, allowing users to send images via satellite.
According to Huawei officials, the satellite image feature operates similarly to the BeiDou satellite messaging feature, except that it sends images instead of text messages. However, due to limited satellite bandwidth, the images sent will undergo lossy compression, resulting in a noticeable difference in quality compared to the original images.
However, even in emergency use, images with lossy compression are sufficient to distinguish the actual situation. The combination of pictures and text is evidently more comprehensive than mere calls and texts.
Currently, other mobile phone brands have yet to catch up with Huawei's Pura 70 series satellite image feature. Some media outlets have even suggested that this feature is absent in Apple's lineup. With its origins in communication technology, Huawei has indeed been leading the way in mobile communication experience and functionality.
