Huawei announced yesterday that it will upgrade its P series to the Pura series, and released a promotional video for the new Huawei Pura 70 series. Industry insiders told Tech Innovation Daily reporters that the Huawei Pura 70 series is ready to go and is expected to be released soon.
Regarding this upgrade, Wu Yiwen, a senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, told Tech Innovation Daily, "The 'P series' is more prominent as a product series of Huawei: because it is difficult for it to register trademarks on its own, it attaches itself to the Huawei brand and promotes itself externally mainly as the 'Huawei P series'. 'Pura' can be trademarked, like 'Mate' and 'Nova', it can be 'Huawei Pura', 'Pura series' or simply 'Pura' itself." "Therefore, this renaming is an upgrade for the P series in terms of brand establishment. Of course, 'Pura' is more symmetrical with 'Nova' and 'Mate'," Wu Yiwen said.
Prior to this, except for the P50 series released in July, Huawei has always chosen to release P series phones at the end of March since the P20 series. Therefore, the release date of the Huawei Pura 70 series has become a hot topic over the past month.
Reporters learned that internally at Huawei, preparations were originally underway for a late March release. In early April, industry insiders told Tech Innovation Daily reporters that the launch event for the P70 series was planned to be canceled, and the vanguard plan would be initiated at any time, with agents on standby during the Qingming Festival holiday, and sales could start suddenly from now on. However, there were later reports that the vanguard plan for the P70 series would also be postponed.
Yesterday, Huawei finally unveiled the veil of the Pura 70 series. From the official teaser video and previously leaked photos, it can be seen that the Huawei Pura 70 series has confirmed its triangular lens design. The official website's test models include Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra, positioning it as the benchmark for annual imaging flagship, not only bringing a brand-new exterior design but also carrying Huawei's latest imaging system.
Several flagship Huawei stores contacted by reporters for the arrival time of the Huawei Pura 70 series indicated to "Sci-Tech Innovation Board Daily" that there is currently no specific release date. However, they are accepting phone numbers for notification upon availability.
Tianfeng International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously predicted a significant increase in shipments for the P70 series in 2024 compared to the P60 series released in 2023. Depending on the strength of demand for replenishing phone inventory, P70 shipments are expected to increase by 230% to 13-15 million units; or by 150% to 10-12 million units if demand slows.
He also highlighted the major selling points of the P70 series, which include the adoption of a periscope telephoto lens and the use of a 1G6P wave plastic hybrid lens for the wide-angle camera in high-end models, which costs 4-5 times more than a 7P lens due to the use of molded glass.
Recent data from the BCI research institute for the first quarter of 2024 in the Chinese smartphone market showed Huawei ranking third with a market share of 15.5%. Their shipments totaled 10.584 million units, narrowly surpassing Apple.
