Pulsestacks reported on April 24th that companies like OWC and Apex Storage had previously released a variety of PCIe Gen4 products. Recently, HighPoint became the first in the industry to introduce a commercial PCIe Gen5 solution.
HighPoint has launched a new PCIe Gen5 SSD PCIe expansion card, featuring the new Rocket PCIe Gen5 NVMe Switch and M.2 RAID AIC adapter, capable of accommodating up to 32 SSDs. A single PCIe slot can support a maximum of 960TB Gen5 SSD.
The expansion card series is mainly divided into the Rocket 7600 and Rocket 1600 series, with the former targeting edge servers and high-performance PC systems based on Linux/Windows, while the latter is aimed at the enterprise market.
Both series mentioned above utilize Broadcom's PEX89048 PCIe Switch IC, based on the PCIe Gen5 protocol, taking full advantage of Gen5's 16 channels.
Broadcom's 48-channel PEX89048 Switch IC offers 16 dedicated PCIe Gen5 channels, with a bandwidth of up to 64TB/second, supporting up to 32 NVMe M.2 SSDs per slot. Below is a screenshot provided by pulsestacks:
