The Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has been granted the status of Applied Science University, making it the first of its kind in Hong Kong. This announcement was made by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on March 21, 2023.

Speaking at the "Establishment Ceremony of Hong Kong's First Applied Science University," Secretary for Education of the HKSAR, Choi Yuk-lin, expressed her delight at HKMU meeting all the requirements to become the inaugural Applied Science University.

Choi highlighted HKMU's track record in offering Higher Diploma (HD) programs that combine theoretical and practical knowledge, garnering recognition and support from the industry. The university's new status not only marks a milestone for HKMU but also signifies the government's commitment to enhancing the status of vocationally oriented education, paving the way for young people to excel in diverse fields.

In evaluating HKMU's application, the government considered factors such as the institutional review by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ), as well as HKMU's experience in delivering applied degree programs and other vocational and professional education and training (VPET) programs. HKCAAVQ particularly scrutinized HKMU's commitment and capacity as an Applied Science University, including aspects such as governance, management and quality assurance, learning environment and student support, and industry collaboration and recognition.

Established in 1989 as the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong, HKMU became the first self-financed university in Hong Kong in 1997. Having received the Applied Science University title, HKMU, along with similar institutions, will be subject to periodic reviews by HKCAAVQ to ensure continued enhancement of maturity and competitiveness. These institutions are also required to submit annual progress reports to the Education Bureau of the HKSAR.
