Recently, the "Home Appliance Trade-In and Green Distribution Event" sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce was held in Haikou, Hainan Province. The Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with relevant departments, focused on enhancing convenience and improving the recycling system for used home appliances and other renewable resources to facilitate the consumption chain for appliance upgrades. A representative from JD.com also stated at the event that the home appliance trade-in policy has been a hot topic this year. The recent introduction of favorable policies and their detailed implementation have significantly boosted consumer enthusiasm for upgrading their appliances. In March 2024 alone, the number of JD.com users who upgraded their home appliances and furniture through the trade-in program increased by over 140% compared to the same period last year.

During the traditional May Day Golden Week, many consumers take advantage of the spring renovation season to refresh their homes, with new home appliances and furniture being a focal point. To make this process easier and more cost-effective, JD.com has partnered with nearly 10,000 mainstream home appliance and furniture brands to offer trade-in subsidies up to 2,000 CNY from April 22 to May 5.

JD.com originally launched its appliance trade-in service back in 2016 and introduced a similar service for furniture in 2023. Now, by searching "trade-in" on JD.com, consumers can find products ranging from televisions, washing machines, and refrigerators to mattresses, sofas, smart toilets, and bathroom heaters available for trade-in, allowing them to purchase at lower prices and manage the disposal of old items. To date, JD.com's trade-in service has expanded to cover over 200 product subcategories, connecting various stages of the industry chain to establish a comprehensive and mature recycling and processing system. This system effectively reduces carbon emissions and environmental pollution from discarded home appliances and furnishings. For instance, more than 55 categories of small appliances are eligible for JD.com’s trade-in and free doorstep collection service. Moreover, JD.com has partnered with disassembly plants to create a central processing warehouse that integrates recycling, dismantling, sorting, and repairing, ensuring proper handling of more discarded small appliances. JD Home Appliances has launched services tailored to customer needs, including free home visits for old appliances, free disassembly, free transportation, no restrictions on the purchasing channel, age, brand, or condition of the appliance, and using a flat-rate discount model to alleviate consumers' concerns about trading in old for new. This initiative addresses challenges such as the difficulty of transporting and disassembling old appliances. Additionally, JD.com has pioneered the trade-in category for home furnishings and introduced integrated delivery and installation services for appliances like refrigerators, TVs, and washing machines, streamlining the delivery and setup process and saving time for consumers looking to upgrade. They prioritize delivering and installing new devices for consumers engaging in trade-ins. Furthermore, JD Baitiao offers a 12-month interest-free installment plan on new home appliances, further boosting consumers' motivation to upgrade.

In response to national initiatives encouraging appliance trade-ins, JD announced that in 2024 it would partner with more brands to invest 3 billion CNY, intensifying subsidies and enhancing service experiences for home appliance trade-ins. It is anticipated that in 2024, over 20 million users will participate in JD's home appliance trade-in program, with more than 30 million old appliances and furniture items recycled. For those looking to update their home appliances and furniture, JD's trade-in program offers an economical, convenient, and environmentally friendly option.
