Global Layoffs, Inventory Soars: Tesla Model Y Prices Slashed Across the U.S.

On April 20th, Tesla made headlines as it lowered the prices of some electric vehicles in the U.S. market, with the entire Model Y lineup seeing a significant drop of up to $2,000.

The standard-range Model Y RWD's starting price decreased from $44,990 to $42,900 (approximately ¥311,000 RMB), while the long-range variant went from $49,990 to $47,990 (about ¥347,000 RMB). The high-performance Model Y now sits at $51,490, down from $53,490 (around ¥514,000 RMB).

In addition to the Model Y, prices for two other electric vehicles, the Model S and Model X, were also reduced:

  • The Model S long-range version dropped to $72,990 (roughly ¥528,000 RMB), while the price of the Model S Plaid fell to $87,990 (approximately ¥637,000 RMB).
  • The Model X long-range variant now starts at $77,990 (about ¥565,000 RMB), and the Model X Plaid is priced at $92,990 (around ¥673,000 RMB).

However, this price reduction does not currently apply to the Model 3 and Cybertruck, and the company has not provided an official explanation for this decision.

It's worth noting that Tesla has been making headlines frequently recently, with news including Elon Musk's request to reinstate a $550 billion compensation plan, shelving a $25,000 car project, global layoffs exceeding 10%, and the departure of two key executives.

The immediate reason behind the price cut seems to be a sharp decline in quarterly deliveries, leading to a surge in inventory. Clearly, this price reduction aims to boost sales in response to these circumstances. b5ed94f1-5ba3-454f-a9e7-ff43bb18aa0a.png
