On May 26th, it was reported that Geely's Chairman Yang Xueliang recently shared that yesterday afternoon, at the newly opened Chengdu Tianfu International Circuit, Geely's Chairman Li Shufu apprenticed under F1 driver Ma Qinghua to learn racing.
Moreover, Li Shufu also took the wheel of the Lynk & Co 03+ TCR performance car to experience the charm of racing on the track.
Ma Qinghua expressed his gratitude, stating how fortunate he is to be apprenticed under Chairman Shufu! He greatly admires Chairman Shufu for being a pioneer in the Chinese automotive industry, showing personal interest in motorsports. With his support, Ma believes that Chinese motorsports will have even more possibilities in the future!
It is reported that Ma Qinghua in 1987 became the first Chinese driver to enter F1, currently racing for the Cyan Performance Lynk & Co team in WTCR.
Geely Auto is a standout Chinese manufacturer in international racing events with their factory team.
In early May this year, the second round of the 2024 TCR World Touring Car Cup concluded in Morocco, where Chinese driver Ma Qinghua dominated the competition, piloting the Lynk & Co 03 TCR to victory.
The Lynk & Co team secured two wins and a second place in this round, launching a strong challenge for the season's team championship.
Since joining the WTCR (World Touring Car Cup) in 2019, Lynk & Co is now in its sixth season. Lynk & Co has accumulated four TCR team championships and two driver championships.
Geely executive Lin Jie once stated that when Geely started making cars, Chairman Li Shufu harbored two dreams: to "build good cars that ordinary people can afford and make cars travel all over the world" and to "engage in motorsports." He believed that "motorsports and becoming a strong automotive nation are logically connected."
