Former OpenAI exec on AI ‘resurrection’ of the dead: Machines have no souls

SHANGHAI, March 23 (China News Service) -- "Machines don't have souls,” said Zack Kass, former Head of Global Commercialization at OpenAI, in Shanghai on Thursday.

The 2024 Global Developers Pioneer Conference kicked off in Shanghai, and Zack Kass answered a question from the audience after his speech: "What do you think of using AI technology to ‘resurrect’ deceased loved ones?" He gave the above answer.

He said that he has lost loved ones, and he misses them very much. He wishes he could spend more time with them, but the truth is that machines don't have souls. He said that as humans, we are unique.

In his view, “chatting” with the deceased might assuage one's grief in the short term, but he still thinks it creates a strange existence. “I don't think this is the world we want to live in,” he said.

He believes that there should be a clear dividing line between humans and machines, and he thinks that this line should be clearly marked. His biggest concern is that people will use machines to replace themselves in society.

“I don't want to live in a future where I would rather communicate with robots than with people. I think that's not the future we want to live in,” he said.
