Former Director of China CDC, Gao Fu, Appointed as Dean of Zhejiang University's School of Public Health

Public records indicate that Dr. Gao Fu, former director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), has been appointed as the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Zhejiang University.

According to an announcement from the Undergraduate School of Zhejiang University on March 10th, in order to better implement the university's concept of general education, a special "Seeking Truth Lecture Hall" general education course has been established. The sixth lecture will be delivered by Academician Gao Fu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

University records show that Dr. Gao Fu is a professor at Zhejiang University and a visiting professor at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, and a foreign member of the Royal Society of the United Kingdom. He currently serves as the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at Zhejiang University, director of the Key Laboratory of Pathogenic Microbiology and Immunology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, chairman of the Chinese Society for Biotechnology, and vice president of the Chinese Medical Association. He has previously served as the director of the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; dean of the School of Medicine, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention; and deputy director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. His main research areas include cross-species transmission of pathogenic microorganisms, infection mechanisms and host cell immunity, as well as public health policies and global health strategies.

It was noted by The Paper, a Chinese news outlet, that in September 2019, Dr. Gao Fu, then director of the China CDC, was appointed as a "lecture professor" at Zhejiang University. At that time, he expressed that Zhejiang University has significant advantages in both research and teaching, and he hoped that through this cooperation, both parties could fully leverage their strengths to promote public health and education together, and jointly advance the development of national public health undertakings.

In September 2020, Zhejiang University announced the preparation for the establishment of the School of Health Sciences, aiming to create a high-level, internationalized talent training base and innovation platform in the field of health sciences.
