On March 15th, it was exposed that several marriage and dating platforms are exploiting consumers' anxieties for profit.
In recent times, reporters from the March 15th Gala investigated several marriage and dating companies including Zhenai.com, Jiayuan.com, and Love Class, by going undercover as "marriage matchmakers."
During professional training sessions, instructors emphasized the need to first "dangle bait," fabricating "virtual personas" that appeal to clients; then, they would assess clients' spending habits, savings, and other financial information to "screen for wealth."
Following this, they would "block off other possibilities for clients," making the platform their sole hope, exploiting consumer anxieties such as age, fertility, and the feelings of children after divorce, ultimately coaxing consumers into purchasing membership services priced at tens of thousands of CNY.
Some users reported that "(through the platform) after establishing a relationship, it was discovered that the man was not actually single."
These matchmakers from the aforementioned platforms all promise that their companies are serious marriage and dating platforms, claiming to filter out dishonest members and those with major illnesses, ensuring clients' safety in their search for a spouse. However, the reality is far from being so rigorous.
An instructor from Jiayuan.com's training session stated, "We can't verify some of his hidden illnesses." A trainer from Zhenai.com mentioned, "Why do you have to judge? If he says he's not married, then he's not married."
