A recent letter of gratitude arrived at North China University of Science and Technology Affiliated Hospital, thanking Dr. Zhang Jiang, Director of Neurology Departments Two and Four, for his timely intervention on a train journey to save a fellow passenger, the daughter of Ms. Li from Shanxi Province.

The incident occurred on May 21, 2023, aboard Train G2606 from Taiyuan South to Tangshan. Dr. Zhang, returning from a lecture, heard an urgent call for a doctor over the train's intercom. Responding swiftly, he reached the scene to find a passenger unconscious and convulsing. Identifying himself as a doctor, Dr. Zhang quickly assessed the patient's vital signs, laid her flat on the ground, and improvised with tissue paper to clear her mouth of foam. He tilted her head to prevent choking and pried open her clenched jaw to avoid tongue injuries.

In the emergency, Dr. Zhang checked the patient's pulse and fashioned a makeshift stethoscope from a rolled-up magazine to monitor her heart rate. After a series of timely interventions, ensuring the passenger's safety and stability, Dr. Zhang quietly returned to his seat. Throughout the rescue, the train conductor repeatedly asked if an emergency stop was necessary. Dr. Zhang calmly assessed the situation, deciding that the symptoms could be alleviated through the interventions, thus avoiding an emergency stop and ensuring the safety of the high-speed train and other trains on the route.

Back at the hospital, Dr. Zhang never disclosed the incident to anyone until the letter of gratitude arrived, revealing his heroic actions. "As a doctor, when the public needs assistance, anyone would step forward without considering it extraordinary," Dr. Zhang said with a smile in response to the gratitude from the passenger's family and praise from colleagues, before returning to his busy schedule of medical duties. Liu Yundong, head nurse of Neurology Departments Two and Four, commented, "Dr. Zhang is always willing to help, whether it's colleagues or patients. Anyone who needs his assistance can count on him."
